e first extended our reach internationally in 2002, with Bodegas Salentein, a new winery in Mendoza, Argentina. Wineries from Argentina were just beginning to receive attention for their substantial commitment to modern winemaking and classic viticulture, but much about the vast country with its high-elevation vineyards remained unexplored by the American wine press and consumers.
Our intent was to not only communicate the authentic story, facts and soul of this winery dedicated to true-to-varietal, distinctly Argentine wines, but also the essence of Argentine culture, the roots of Malbec and the rich history of winemaking in Mendoza. Having been a part of the early public relations efforts on behalf of California's Russian River Valley appellation, we understood that establishing a sense of place and collaborating with other wineries and vineyards from Mendoza would be critical to our success and the successful promotion of all wines from Argentina.
